K-6 ELA teachers working on a writing scope and sequence

On November 13, 2018, ESU #11 Staff Development Director Kate Hatch met with the K-6 ELA teachers at Elwood Public School. During this meeting, Kate and the staff worked to create a curriculum map for writing. This curriculum map identifies core skills and content taught at each grade level, ensures that there are no gaps in the district’s curriculum, and that a common language of instruction is being used in order to maximize learning and student understanding. Today’s work focused on creating a revising pacing guide. This guide shows which grade levels introduce, reinforce, and master writing skills such as adding details, appositives, similes, metaphors, adverbs and adjectives. Kate then provided guidance as the group created a scope and sequence for the 6 Traits of Writing.  During this process teachers identified specific skills that students need to have mastered at the end of each grade level. This document will ensure that the writing process is being taught at all grade levels.
