ELWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Southwest Reservoirs Kayak Kid Essay Contest rewarded two people who best expressed
their appreciation for the outdoor recreational opportunities in southwest Nebraska. There are
many outdoor things to do in Nebraska, such as fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The
contest required a handwritten, 250-word essay explaining why the writer values life in the
outdoors and also had to include a picture of the writer at one of Nebraska's southwest
reservoirs or parks. The winner of the 10-14 age division was Shannon Kennicutt, who took
home a kayak for her efforts. Taylor Hickey won the 15-18-year-old division, and also won a
kayak. Matteya Gutierrez got second place in the 15-18-year-old age division and received a
fishing pole. Good job, Elwood, on your essays!
