ELWOOD SCHOOL HISTORY

The first four school buildings in Elwood were frame buildings. The first building was a frame building (possibly built in 1895) was moved to the east part of town and has long ago been torn down, the second building is now used by J.B. Chambers as a grocery store, the third one burned down having been truck by lightning, ( A new school building was discussed in 1901 and by 1904, a public school was built – $1,200 for the land, $2,000 for the building and $300 for the books.)

The fourth one was used until 1908 when it was replaced by the present grade building. This fourth building stood on the site of the R.L. Bragg barbershop until it was sold to the Odd Fellow Lodge (I.O.O.F.) when it was moved to its present position. The grade school building cost $12,607 33 It was used for all the grades from the primary to high school until 1929 when once again it became necessary for the Elwood community to enlarge their school plant. In 1929 after considerable discussion, bonds were voted for the construction of a new $32,000 high school building. The first graduation exercises, when the school had grown to ten grades, were held in 1989. F.W. Montgomery was the principal.

A new elementary building was constructed and opened in 1961, this included an administrative office, kitchen, and a new gymnasium was finished at the school in 1962.

A new high school was added to the elementary school complex in 1968-69 for $395,000 and opened in 1970. This created a “beauty spot” at the center of the school. In 2000, this spot was filled in with new locker rooms, library, distance learning room and another classroom. At the same time the kitchen was expanded into the old junior high locker room space that was in the multi-purpose room and a new weight room was also built on the west side of the school.

During the pandemic 2020 saw the latest addition which provided new administrative offices, secure entrance, expanded janitorial space, handicapped accessible restrooms and a dedicated concession stand.
