Preschoolers and construction

The Preschoolers have been learning about construction this month.  We have explored this topic by reading books and building with boxes and other manipulatives.  They saw the pictures of the progress of the renovation on the Elwood Public Schools webpage.  Today they were given the opportunity to experience construction and destruction first hand.

Mr. Clint from BD Construction read the preschoolers a book called Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site  and allowed them to join him in the construction area.  We were able to see how a jackhammer works, watch them pour cement from a cement truck and he talked to the kids about the changes that are going to be happening in that area.

Once we arrived back in the classroom, the students were engaged in building in all facets of construction.  They were busy making ‘blueprints’, being ‘engineers’, making phone calls, paying bills for the concrete and ordering ‘lunch from McDonalds’ to feed their workers.

Thank you Mr. Hatch and Mr. Clint for allowing us to experience construction first hand.
