Elwood Public Schools is looking forward to beginning school this fall! Teachers will report August 11, 2020 and we will welcome students on August 13, 2020. This year will most likely require flexibility with scheduling and changes to the previously made calendar. The district continues to work diligently to create re-opening plans that center around the safety of students and staff. These plans will be released the last week of July. Keeping the building and facilities clean and disinfected as well as incorporating social distancing when it is practical is a priority for the district. Please be assured that these measures are not being taken lightly. Currently the NSAA has endorsed the idea of starting Fall sports as previously scheduled. Practices can officially begin on August 10, 2020. Coaches are allowed to have a conditioning period the week before official practices begin. We plan to offer those conditioning sessions. Thank you for your continued support of Elwood Public Schools. We are excited to have students back in the building! Stay tuned for more information in the very near future. The village of Elwood could use your help. During a lunch meeting the village board heard and accepted an offer from USA Communications in Kearney to potentially wire the town with fiber and offer up to 1Gbps (Giga bits per second ) Internet access. As part of the grant USA Communications is applying for to fund this project they need letters of support as well as a speed test and your opinion on how Internet access may have affected you. While this project would probably not be finished during this school year it still greatly benefits anyone working or studying from home. Based on our past few months, access to fast Internet would certainly benefit all of us whether at work, being students at home or at play. Attached are some sample letters and a link to the speed test. We need all this by tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5 PM. The village appreciates your help and support in this endeavor that will benefit all parts of the community. Thanks for you help to improve the village as well as the students we serve at Elwood Public School. What that means is all assignments from that point forward will be expected to be completed and will be graded. Elementary parents please contact your child’s teacher via email, or the normal class communication for further instructions on each class. High school students be sure to check your ipads for upcoming assignments. Please remember that this is new to everyone and we will do our best to prepare your students for the next level in their educational careers. Elementary parents: ipads are ready to be picked up for grades 1 through 6 at the south door of the school. They may be picked up from 8:30 to 3:00 on Thursday or Friday. If you need to pick them up earlier please contact the school and schedule a time. When you show up to the school we will bring your child’s items to your vehicle. Dear Students, Parents and Patrons, COVID-19 has changed how business is done at Elwood Public Schools. Our building has been closed since March 19th. Unfortunately the current recommendation from the Commissioner of Education is that schools not have students in the building through April 30, 2020. The Commissioner has also indicated that it is "highly unlikely" that we will return to school this school year. This recommendation is also highly encouraged by the Governor and the Public Health Officials. Based on these recommendations, Elwood Public School will be closing its building through April 30th. I believe that Kearney Public School said it the best. "Our buildings are closed, but the school year is not over". Knowing that learning must continue to progress, it will look different and be outside of our normal brick and mortar setting. All teachers at Elwood Schools are currently providing enrichment activities to students. These enrichment activities are a review of skills that students have already learned this year. Beginning in the very near future, teachers will be implementing a continuity of learning plan. More details about this plan will be provided very soon. At this time, grades 7-12 have mobile devices available and will receive communication from teachers regarding assignments and due dates. We are currently working on a schedule to check out mobile devices to elementary students. Families will be notified when devices can be picked up for check out at the south entry door. Elementary parents and students will receive information regarding assignments and due dates in the near future. If your student does not have access to the internet, please let us know by calling (308) 785-2491. This situation is developing rapidly, and conditions are changing daily and at times hourly. Please be assured that school administrators and board members are closely monitoring official state guidelines from the Nebraska Department of Education, the Governor's Office, and the State Health Officials. We will continue to re-evaluate our building closure as this situation continues to evolve. School activities through April are cancelled. Recommendations right now do not allow us to have gatherings of more than 10 people in a room at a time. We will continue to monitor this situation and look forward to a time when we can return to hosting schooland activities as we normally would do. Respectfully, Daren L. Hatch
Our FFA labor auction scheduled for March 26th is cancelled.

Due to the COVID19 concern, the NSAA has suspended District speech.

Yesterday, 3rd grade students designed a house that wouldn’t blow away in the “wind” for science. Today, we had our contractor, Clint, come in and explain how foundations/footings, anchor bolts, studs, roofs, etc. all go into building a structure that doesn’t blow away in the wind! Everything is connect so that foundation keeps us in place! We’re loving all the real life learning with this construction on site! Next week we can hopefully see the actual footings for this new construction!

Fun things and facts you find during construction. Apparently there used to be a window from the sixth grade room to the lobby that was covered up by the trophy case. Also learned today that the old elementary lobby originally was just one big room, the offices were not added until the high school addition was done. (Thanks Stan Schutz for that one!)
